# Credits and pricing

> What each search, story and agent run costs, and when you are not charged.

Requests are paid from one balance of **NCC** credits. Only successful work is
charged.

## News API

A search is charged by the [effort](/docs/news/effort-levels.md) you ask for:

| Request | Credits |
| - | - |
| `/search` with `effort=low` | 1 NCC |
| `/search` with `effort=medium` (default) | 5 NCC |
| `/search` with `effort=high` | 10 NCC |
| `/stories/{story_id}` | 1 NCC, whatever the number of articles |
| `/subscription` | Free |

* A search is charged only when it succeeds (`200`). A search that finds
  nothing is still charged.
* A request that is refused or fails (`401`, `402`, `403`, `422`, `429`, `500`,
  `503`) is never charged.

Your plan's prices are in the `credits_per_search` and `story` fields of
[`GET /subscription`](/docs/get-started/rate-limits#check-your-plan).

## Agent

An events run is charged per run, by its mode, and per extra 50 rows past the
first 50. Company research and company monitors are charged per company.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Draft prices, to be confirmed before launch.

| Run | Price |
| - | - |
| Event research, `fast` | \$1 per run, 50 rows included |
| Event research, `standard` | \$3 per run, 50 rows included |
| Event research, `max` | \$6 per run, 50 rows included |
| Each extra 50 rows (`fast` / `standard` / `max`) | +$0.50 / +$1.50 / +\$3 |
| Company research | \$0.50 per company |
| Event monitor, daily | Half a run of its mode |
| Event monitor, weekly or less often | One run of its mode |
| Company monitor | \$1.50 per company per month |

Failed runs are free. A run that finds nothing is still charged.

## When your balance runs out

A News API request your balance does not cover gets `402`. A monitor whose
runs your balance no longer covers is paused with `paused_reason:
"out_of_credits"`: top up, then resume it.
